How to Set Up a Home Based Business

Setting up a successful home-based business needs organization, patience and professionalism. As a matter of fact a home-based business is popular only because it requires less setup cost. A home-based business setup provides an owner the flexibility and the freedom of creating his own schedule. The one issue of concern before starting a home-based business is the availability of resources necessary for the business.

Pick a home business idea that interests you, for which you have a talent or expertise, for which there is a need, and which you can afford to finance. Do your market research. In a home business, as in any business, getting as much information as possible on your customers, competition, suppliers and market area before you start is essential. Do a complete business plan, including financial planning, before beginning. Check on and obtain all necessary licenses, permits and registrations for your line of business. This includes checking with your city/town/R.M. to see if it’s legal to operate your business from home.

As you set up your home-based business, pay attention to family and space considerations. If you have ever tried to run a business from your living room, you can understand why it is vital to have a separate space for your office in the house. A spare bedroom or a room in your basement should be adequate when you first start out. If possible, try to select a room that is away from the high traffic areas of your home. The more peace and quiet you have, the more productive you will be.

Many of you are qualified professionals who are seeking to transition from the traditional office to a “work at home” lifestyle. Some are unable to work in a traditional workplace for personal, family, or health reasons. The number of telecommute workers, freelance, independent contractors, and consultants working from home is increasing dramatically as well, as are the number of employers who are realizing the benefits of starting a telework program — including financial incentives and free consulting services.

A home-based business is not for everyone. For many people it will be a supplemental income source for retirement or extra income for the family. In fact, only 46 percent of home-based and micro business owners recently surveyed cited that making lots of money was a motivation for starting their own business. Seventy-eight percent of business owners stated that having more control over their lives was an important reason, and 90 percent said they would go into business again.

The minimum furniture requirement to set up a home-based office is a desk, desk chair, and file drawer or cabinet. A computer, printer and scheduling device comprise the equipment that will round out your office set-up. Your desk can be a large table (think dining size) or an actual office desk. Small folding tables are too restrictive and won’t hold your computer plus other necessary paperwork.
