Education

Physical activity offers a broad range of benefits, including the prevention of obesity, improved self confidence, and an overall sense of well-being. Physical education programs within the school setting can set the stage for how children view physical fitness, activity levels, and future health. Physical education programs also include general health and safety.

It is recognised that physical education (PE) is the only comprehensive way of providing young people with skills and knowledge for life-long participation in physical activity. In Ireland, the time and resource afforded to PE within the curriculum is amongst the lowest in Europe.

Physical education as well as promoting healthy exercise and healthy living, also aims to promote team building and working as a member of a team. Games such as football, cricket and badminton where the use of teams are a must aim to help the students build a rapport with their counterparts and also show how they can win – or at least play to their best – whilst working as a unit.
